A Fairer and More Effective Carbon Tax

By implementing North America’s most ambitious carbon tax, B.C. demonstrated leadership in moving toward a low-carbon economy. The carbon tax will help the province reduce greenhouse gas pollution by making decisions that are good for the planet also be good for the pocketbook.

There are four clear opportunities to improve the carbon tax’s effectiveness and fairness in 2011:

1.    Fix the loopholes so that it is applied equally to all emissions that can be accurately measured.

2.    Increase protection for low-income families so that they are not adversely affected.

3.    Commit to continue increasing the carbon tax.

4.    Invest a portion of any new carbon tax revenues in projects that reduce emissions.
