The Challenge

The global warming crisis is the single greatest challenge of our generation. The problem is caused by heat-trapping gases building up in the atmosphere at a dangerous rate – primarily a result of burning fossil fuels. To reduce this global warming pollution, British Columbia and other jurisdictions need to overhaul the way we produce and use energy. Failing to do so will result in catastrophic consequences for our economy and environment.

One of the best ways governments can help solve this problem is by making it increasingly more expensive to produce global warming pollution. Doing so makes cleaner sources of energy more and more affordable relative to dirty options. B.C. took an important step in this direction with the implementation of the carbon tax in 2008. The province’s challenge is to take the next steps so that the carbon tax becomes fairer and more effective.
