The Solution
A modern Mineral Tenure Act would ensure that future resource projects would be carefully planned and pose minimal risk. It would include:
- An exploration approval process to replace Free Entry.
- Ecosystem values and other interests considered before final approval of tenure
- A requirement of consultation and consent from First Nations and private landowners
- Tenures only considered in areas with strategic land-use plans
- An environmental assessment that includes cumulative impacts for advanced exploration activities
- Revised regulation of early stage exploration
- Consultations to cover all stages of exploration activity
- A dispute resolution process for early resolutions to internet-based staking conflicts
