The Opportunity
BC’s Flathead River Valley has long been recognized as the missing piece of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park established by Alberta and Montana. UNESCO has designated Waterton Lakes and Glacier National Parks as Biosphere Reserves, and has proclaimed the entire International Peace Park a World Heritage Site.
The Flathead and proposed Wildlife Management Area are critical parts of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, which aims to preserve North America’s most significant remaining wildlife corridor.
Permanent protection for the lower one-third of the Flathead River Valley--in the form of a National Park—and a Southern Rocky Mountain Wildlife Management Area will complete the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and connect BC’s share of the Crown of the Continent ecosystem. National Geographic magazine calls the Crown of the Continent “one of the most diverse and ecologically intact natural ecosystems in the temperate zones of the world.”
