The Solution

BC must do its part to protect the Crown of the Continent ecosystem. The BC government has taken the first step in banning mining and energy extraction in the Flathead River Valley.

A National Park would give BC’s portion of the Crown of the Continent ecosystem the same high level of protection enjoyed in Alberta and Montana. A Flathead National Park would adjoin the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and likely be designated part of the World Heritage Site and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The BC government must give its approval for a National Park Feasibility Study before community consultation and a full study can begin.

A legislated Wildlife Management Area connecting the Waterton-Glacier-Flathead to Canada’s Rocky Mountain Parks complex (Banff, Kootenay, Yoho, Jasper) would result in a globally significant wildlife corridor. This designation would provide the BC Ministry of Environment the mandate and necessary tools to protect wildlife habitat into the future.
