The Solution
The Strait of Georgia is the only part of coastal British Columbia that is not currently under going a concerted marine planning process. This means that protection of this unique and incredibly biodiverse region should be a top priority for BC, especially in light of the recent provincial Ocean and Coastal Strategy.
In order for the NMCA to proceed, the provincial and federal governments should resume negotiations on this issue. These governments need to work together on completing the feasibility study, and to formalize an agreement to protect the special ecosystems of the Southern Strait of Georgia.
British Columbians should voice their support for the Southern Strait of Georgia NMCA so that we do not lose this important opportunity to protect one of the most at-risk environments in Canada.
